1974 MGB (Chrome Bumper)

This car came to me from my local friend who re-homes cars. He found this one in Alabama as a rust free car that needed attention. It appeared have been painted in a high humidity, leaving it with an orange peel finish. He had done a number a projects on the car before I bought it. He installed a new fuel tank, stainless steel exhaust, front grill, radiator, brakes and a few other things. I’d been eyeing this car for quite a while and when I sold the 79 MGB LE and immediately, the same day, bought it.

I began my refresh with the paint. I began the process by sanding it with progressive grits of sandpaper, working up to 2000. That was followed by buffing compounds to bring it back to a flat surface. This was my first experience with repairing a paint job this bad. I guess, part of the fun of doing this is the learning.

I’ve also done a number of other upgrades and will continue to play with the car for quite a while. I’ve had the head rebuilt with new valves and hardened valve seats. At that same time I installed an over drive transmission and tightened up any leaks that were apparent on the engine. My current project (2023) will be to install VMAXscart super charger kit. I’ll add to my blog with photos as I work on that.

Side Note:

Previous Alabama Owner… sometimes called the DPO (Dumb Previous Owners, or other D words) had done what they could at that time. I respect what they have done as it was the best they knew or could afford at the time. We all need to remember there wasn’t an Internet or Moss back then. Oh, and I also remind myself that I will be the “previous owner” in the future. I can only hope they have the same attitude about me.
